Another Voice: Access to technology can help incarcerated people in many ways

Despite our desire for impartiality, justice does not exist in a vacuum and every legal decision carries profound implications. Drawing from my experience as an attorney and advocate, I have seen how court rulings impact the lives of incarcerated individuals and their families. While we aspire to a system of blind justice, the human toll is undeniable.

As someone originally from New York, I couldn’t help but cringe at the reality that nearly 60,000 New Yorkers are behind bars. These numbers represent tens of thousands of futures shaped by the correctional system. Today, technology is paramount for successful rehabilitation and reentry. Historically, communication options for incarcerated individuals in New York have been limited, hindering citizens’ ability to maintain connections even before trying to reenter modern life. Advancements in technology create opportunities to address these challenges.
