Do-Not-Record Telephone Number Search

New York City Department of Correction

For security reasons, the New York City Department of Correction (NYC DOC) records all calls placed by incarcerated individuals on facility phones unless the calls are made to phone numbers designated “private” or “Do-Not-Record.” These designations generally apply to incarcerated individuals’ attorneys, medical professionals, and clergy members. This protocol is standard for correctional facilities nationwide because it protects the health and safety of both incarcerated persons and members of the broader community. It also assists law enforcement efforts to prevent and solve crimes.

NYC DOC contracts with Securus Technologies, LLC (Securus) to provide telephone services within NYC DOC facilities. As part of this contract, Securus® receives from NYC DOC the telephone numbers NYC DOC designates as private or Do-Not-Record. Securus maintains NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List to automate the prevention of recording calls to private numbers. Unless and until a phone number is properly registered and the owner of the number has received written confirmation that the number is on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List, calls to that number from incarcerated individuals in NYC DOC facilities will be recorded and/or monitored.

You can use this website to search for your telephone number on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List by doing the following:

  1. Type your 10-digit phone number, without spaces, dashes, or dots in the box below;
  2. Click “Submit”;
  3. You will receive a response stating “Yes” or “No.”

Yes = the 10-digit phone number is on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List.  No further action is needed to confirm that calls to this number will not be recorded for calls originating from any location in the NYC DOC.

No = the 10-digit phone number is not on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List.

If the 10-digit phone number you entered is not on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List, calls to that number from incarcerated individuals in NYC DOC facilities will be recorded and/or monitored.

If you would like to submit your number to be placed on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List, please click on the below hyperlink to the NYC DOC page and follow the instructions there to submit your request to set your number to private.

Please note that all callers to numbers not on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List currently receive the following automated admonishment at the beginning of every call they place:

“This call is subject to recording and or monitoring. An inmate’s use of institutional telephones constitutes consent and your calls may be provided to law enforcement agencies.”

Likewise, all persons receiving calls at numbers not on NYC DOC’s Do-Not-Record List currently receive an automated admonishment at the beginning of every call they receive stating:

“This call is not private.  It will be recorded and may be monitored for law enforcement purposes.  If you are an attorney please hang up and follow facility instructions to register this number as a private number by going to www.nyc.gov/doc.”

Securus cannot unilaterally privatize your phone number.

Attorneys, medical professionals and members of the clergy must register their phone numbers at each correctional facility where they intend to participate in non-recorded calls, including NYC DOC.  If you register your number at NYC DOC as private, it only will be private at NYC DOC facilities and not any other facilities, including, for example, New York State Department of Correction and Community Supervision (NYDOCCS) facilities.
